Missouri Issues New Rules on Expungements

An expungement is when you ask a court to remove a conviction or guilty plea of a crime from your criminal record.  Missouri has issued new rules on expungements.  First, there is now a $250 filing fee.   Second, only the following crimes can be expunged: (1) any felony or misdemeanor offense of writing a bad check, (2) any felony or misdemeanor offense of fraudulently using a credit device, and (3) other offenses.  Third, the following crimes cannot be expunged: (1) Class A felonies, (2) Dangerous felonies, (3) Sex offenses, (4) Crimes resulting in a death, (5) Felony assault, and (6) other offenses.

2017 Tax Season Starts January 29

The IRS has stated that it will begin accepting tax returns on January 29, 2018.  The tax deadline to file your 2017 income tax returns is April 17, 2018.  Tax refunds are expected to begin being paid out around the middle of February 2018.

Tax Department Can Estimate Your Business Income

The Missouri Department of Revenue is able to review your bank statements and credit card transactions, among other documents, to determine how much money you made and whether you accurately reported your income.  If you do not provide them with your bank statements or other documents, you may be charged a penalty for failing to keep adequate records.

Getting Rid of Student Loans in Bankruptcy

Ocwen Loan Servicing Sanctioned $119,000

A bankruptcy court has sanctioned mortgage servicer Ocwen Loan Servicing in the amount of $119,000 for violating the bankruptcy automatic stay.  The automatic stay stops a creditor from trying to collect on a debt that was discharged in bankruptcy.  Ocwen Loan Servicing was accused of calling a bankruptcy consumer over 100 times to collect a debt that was erased in bankruptcy.

IRS Accepting Returns this Month

January 10th, 2018

For the 2017 tax year, the Internal Revenue Service will be accepting tax returns beginning January 29, 2018.  The Internal Revenue Service will be issuing tax refunds for the earned income credit on February 27, 2018.  The last day to file your tax return is April 17, 2018.

Kansas City Payday Lender is Convicted in a $220 Million Fraud Scheme
