Here are a few tips about paying your taxes:
- Never send cash. The IRS accepts checks and electronic payments, including debit or credit cards.
- You can pay the IRS through direct withdrawal of your bank account using the IRS Direct Pay method.
- If you have someone assist you with your tax return, be sure to ask them how you can pay your tax bill.
- If you pay the IRS by debit or credit card, the IRS will hit you with a processing fee.
- If you pay the IRS processing fee, you can deduct it on next year’s tax return.
- Make your check, money order, or cashier’s check payable to U.S. Treasury.
- Be sure to include your social security number on your check, money order, or cashier’s check so the IRS applies your payment to your tax bill.
- If you are mailing your payment to the IRS, be sure to include Form 1040-V.
