{"id":352,"date":"2010-06-24T11:35:19","date_gmt":"2010-06-24T16:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hoorfarlaw.com\/blog\/?p=352"},"modified":"2010-06-24T11:35:19","modified_gmt":"2010-06-24T16:35:19","slug":"affordable-care-act-provides-expanded-benefits-to-health-professionals-in-underserved-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoorfarlaw.com\/blog\/?p=352","title":{"rendered":"Affordable Care Act Provides Expanded Benefits to Health Professionals in Underserved Areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Internal Revenue Service <a title=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/article\/0,,id=224387,00.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/article\/0,,id=224387,00.html\">announced<\/a>\u00a0that health care professionals who received student loan relief under state programs that reward those who work in underserved communities may qualify for refunds on their 2009 federal income tax returns as well as an annual tax cut going forward under a new provision in the <em>Affordable Care Act<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 Employers, including tax-exempt employers, in underserved areas can help eligible health professionals take advantage of this new benefit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Employers of\u00a0eligible medical professionals who\u00a0withheld and paid taxes under the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) on payments covered under the new exclusion may\u00a0seek a refund of withheld FICA on the employee&#8217;s behalf.
