Understanding how gig work can affect taxes may sound complicated but, it doesn\u2019t have to be. The IRS offers several resources to help gig economy taxpayers properly fulfill their tax responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some things gig workers should keep in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gig work is taxable:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Earnings from gig economy work is taxable, regardless of whether an individual receives information returns. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMjgsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMjAxMTIuNTE2Njg1OTEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5pcnMuZ292L3B1Yi9pcnMtcGRmL2kxMDk5ay5wZGYifQ.UT5lxFuto_ONNkp88D55fEntG9aGWveeXQ46kb8JQsY\/s\/855127662\/br\/124637219482-l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reporting requirement<\/a> for issuance of Form 1099-K changed for payments received in 2022 to totals exceeding $600, regardless of the total number of transactions. This means some gig workers will now receive an information return. This is true even if the work is full-time, part-time or if an individual is paid in cash.<\/li><li>Gig workers may also be required to make quarterly estimated income tax payments and pay their share of Social Security and Medicare taxes.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Check worker classification:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>While providing gig economy services, it is important that the taxpayer is correctly classified.<\/li><li>This means the business, or the platform, must determine whether the individual providing the services is an employee or independent contractor.<\/li><li>Taxpayers can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMjksInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMjAxMTIuNTE2Njg1OTEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5pcnMuZ292L2J1c2luZXNzZXMvc21hbGwtYnVzaW5lc3Nlcy1zZWxmLWVtcGxveWVkL2luZGVwZW5kZW50LWNvbnRyYWN0b3Itc2VsZi1lbXBsb3llZC1vci1lbXBsb3llZSJ9.8tKAq682u8UTVuQuOigTXg724sCdssve_WY1GKMpOB4\/s\/855127662\/br\/124637219482-l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worker classification<\/a> page on IRS.gov to see how they are classified.<\/li><li>Independent contractors may be able to deduct business expenses, depending on tax limits and rules.
