Frivolous Appeals

Be careful of your actions if you decide to appeal a court case.  A Missouri appeals court has recently ruled that a frivolous appeal by someone can warrant a court sanction against the appealing party.  In the Ampleman v. Dish Network appellate case, Mr. DIshman had to pay DIsh Network $1,500 to reimburse Dish Network for their attorney fees when Mr. Dishman’s appeal had no merit and should not have occurred.  If you are facing a trial or thinking of appealing a case, feel free to contact our law office at 816-524-4949 or visit our website at www.Hoorfarlaw.com.

Foreclosure Equals Loss of Ownership

When a foreclosure occurs, the mortgagor (the person who borrowed the money for the house) loses their interest in the property.  The mortgagee (the lending institution or bank) takes the property back and sells it to the highest bidder.  The highest bidder gets title to the property at the close of the foreclosure sale and the bidder can be the bank or anyone else.  In Missouri, a foreclosure sale can occur without the courts or a Judge getting involved.  In Kansas, a foreclosure cannot occur until a Judge has signed off and approved the sale.  If you are facing a foreclosure and want to know your options, feel free to contact our law office at 816-524-4949 or visit our website at www.Hoorfarlaw.com.

Tips about Tipping the IRS

Here are a few tips about paying your taxes:

  1. Never send cash. The IRS accepts checks and electronic payments, including debit or credit cards.
  2. You can pay the IRS through direct withdrawal of your bank account using the IRS Direct Pay method.
  3. If you have someone assist you with your tax return, be sure to ask them how you can pay your tax bill.
  4. If you pay the IRS by debit or credit card, the IRS will hit you with a processing fee.
  5. If you pay the IRS processing fee, you can deduct it on next year’s tax return.
  6. Make your check, money order, or cashier’s check payable to U.S. Treasury.
  7. Be sure to include your social security number on your check, money order, or cashier’s check so the IRS applies your payment to your tax bill.
  8. If you are mailing your payment to the IRS, be sure to include Form 1040-V.
