Individuals with Significant Tax Debt Should Act Promptly to Avoid Revocation of Passports

Under the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, the Internal Revenue Service notifies a State Department of taxpayers certified as owing a seriously delinquent tax debt, which is currently $52,000 and above. The law then requires a State Department to deny their passport application or renewal.  A State Department may revoke a passport or limit a taxpayer’s ability to travel outside the U.S.
