StarKist, Facing $100 Million Fine, Says it Cannot Pay

In 2018, StarKist pleaded guilty to fixing prices on canned tuna, along with two of its main competitors, Chicken of the Sea and Bumble Bee Foods LLC. The federal investigation has entangled the three companies in civil lawsuits and criminal proceedings. Prosecutors are trying to elicit the largest possible fine that is allowed under the plea agreement, which is pressuring StarKist’s finances. The guilty plea can penalize StarKist up to $100 million, but the company has said it can only afford to pay $50 million and is requesting the judge to reduce the fine.
